Whiter teeth? It is possible. Can you do it yourself?

These are the questions that the team of La Quotidienne tried to answer in the company of two guests who are professionals in the field of teeth whitening, Corinne L., a dentist, and the President of the brand WHITECARE, a company that markets numerous totally healthy teeth whitening formulas for use at home.

A bright smile and white teeth are everyone’s dream, and it seems to be becoming accessible to most people.

Indeed, many alternatives exist: toothpaste, charcoal for the teeth, kit of dental bleaching at home, passage to the dentist… But which to choose, and what really works?

The team at La Quotidienne investigated.

1. Study on whitening toothpastes

If they are the easiest to find in the supermarket and their price makes them very accessible, whitening toothpastes are very popular. Depending on the brand, some are enriched with bicarbonate, which provides a slight polishing effect. Others contain hydrogen peroxide in very low doses, so there is no risk. If your teeth seem whiter thanks to these toothpastes, rest assured that your eyesight is fine! The secret? Most whitening toothpastes contain a dye that subtly tints the gums or teeth. As a result, teeth appear whiter and your smile brighter.

2. Tooth whitening at the dentist

A whitening done at your dentist will be effective, in one or two sessions, under supervision, your teeth will really gain in whiteness. However, you can expect to spend several hundred euros. Do not neglect the possible post-intervention sensitisation. Indeed, the dentist uses gels with a higher dose of hydrogen peroxide which can sometimes cause hypersensitivity. Rest assured that this sensitivity is fortunately temporary.

There are other alternatives. Less expensive, and respectful of your teeth.

3. Focus on teeth whitening pens

The whitening pen safely gives your smile a glow. Easy to use, only 15 minutes of application, and a visible effect in a few minutes. This is not only good for your smile but also for your wallet: WHITECARE offers these magic pens for less than 10 euros.

4. Introducing WHITECARE tooth whitening kits

These well thought-out boxes are easy to use. After brushing your teeth with the preparation provided, simply apply the tooth whitening gel (-0.1% peroxide) to a universal flexible tray which will clip onto the 5 LED BOOSTER UV lamp before being positioned on your teeth. Twenty minutes of exposure with the lamp on, rinsing, and guaranteed results! The procedure can be repeated daily until the desired shade is reached or the gels are used up, for an optimal and long-lasting effect.

5. Summary of the La Quotidienne programme on tooth whitening

The debate was enriching that day on the set of La Quotidienne, and 3 points were unanimously agreed upon by the professionals involved.

Firstly, no more falsely effective grandmother’s recipes! Baking soda sold in hypermarkets can scratch your teeth and make them brittle, while the acidity of lemon will strongly attack your enamel, and the damage can be irreversible. So be careful with their use, which should only be occasional.

Secondly, tooth whitening gels should contain less than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide.

Secondly, whatever technique you choose, a preliminary check-up with your dentist is essential to ensure the good health of your teeth (cavities, cracks) and your gums before any intervention.
